Afternoon Tea

When you travel Glacier Dome experienceTM onboard the Whistler Mountaineer train, you will be introduced to Afternoon Tea. A delightful English meal tradition inspired by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1800s.

Our version of this ritual is a casual and elegantly delicious meal service that promises to satisfy all of your senses. Your tea service begins with an offering of delicate tea sandwiches and fresh warm scones served with strawberry preserves and thick Devon cream. As you sip your cup of specialty tea, you’ll be encouraged to indulge in an offering of light pastries, called Petit Fours, along with fresh strawberries dipped in chocolate. This is an occasion to be savoured!

History of Afternoon Tea

The popularity of tea spread across England in the early 1700s. Before the introduction of tea in Britain, the English had two main meals, breakfast and dinner.

Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford (1788 – 1861) and one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting, experienced a sinking feeling in the late afternoon. Adopting the European tea service format, she invited friends to join her for a fortifying additional afternoon meal, at five o’clock, in her rooms at Belvoir Castle. The menu centered around small cakes, bread-and-butter sandwiches, assorted sweets and, of course, tea. Afternoon tea, as we know it was born.

When the British immigrated to Western Canada, they brought the practice of afternoon tea with them and it has been a tradition in B.C. ever since.
