Heritage Observation Car #598 - Henry Pickering
The Heritage Observation Car, Henry Pickering has a long history of service on Canadian railways dating back to its original construction in 1914 by the Canadian Pacific Railway as coach #1422. The CPR had a long history of using open cars for tourist service in the Canadian Rockies, but needed to upgrade from the old wooden cars to steel cars in the 1950's. Car #1422 was chosen and was converted to its open observation configuration as #598 in 1955, entering service that year on CPR's Mountaineer between Vancouver and Chicago. The car ended up in regular service as the Mount Garibaldi car on British Columbia's Royal Hudson steam train starting in 1974. Open observation car 598 remains owned by the West Coast Railway Association and is now named after Henry Pickering (1899 - 1994), who spent his entire working life as a CN Station Agent in British Columbia. The Heritage Observation Car is a grand way to enjoy the spectacular British Columbia scenery along the route of the Whistler Mountaineer.
Note: All guests have access to the Heritage Observation Car during declared periods of the journey. Please understand that the open observation car will be closed during travel through tunnels and possibly at times during the meal service.
